While I do support the work of charity giants such as War Child, Amnesty International, World Vision, and the David Suzuki Foundation, I feel it is important to provide a platform where grassroots organizations can be recognized for the work they do on a local, national, and/or international level.

The International Charity for Ill Children is a Registered Canadian Charity that assists critically ill Vietnamese children with the cost of medical care, hospital expenses and other basic supplies. They also assist with the cost of operations, chemotherapy, medications to cancer children of Vietnam. The organization is headed by Kim Tran, who after the passing of her son Hiep wanted to keep the charity (his dream) alive. I learned about them while visiting the Hoi Choi Tet (Vietnamese New Year) 2010 celebration at Exhibition Place in Toronto, where I saw their booth and was overhelmed by the direct impact and meaningfulness of the work they do. I instantly wanted to help.

The OCAA is a diverse, multi-stakeholder coalition of approximately 90 organizations that was formed in 1997 to address the reduction of air pollution in Ontario. Members include cities, health associations, public interest groups and utilities, unions, faith communities and individuals. The OCAA's aims to phase-out Ontario's four coal-fired power plants by 2010 and ensure all electricity needs are met by ecologically sustainable renewable sources. I became a member of the OCAA after I met a volunteer outside of The St Lawerence Market who was passionately encouraging people to speak out against the renewal of nuclear power plants in Ontario.
